1940s Fashion Course Books 'Harmony in Dress' and 'First Steps in Dressmaking'
Two fabulous mid century dressmaking scholastic course books - Harmony in Dress  and First Steps in Dressmaking . Both books were published for the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences in Scranton, PA. Book covers are all black with embossed titles on the covers and gold gilt lettering on the spines. Both books contain an invaluable cache of garment making information - charts, illustrations, photos, tables, color guides & foldouts. Get both books for just $29.
These hardcover books were owned by Shirley Conway, a member of the Woman's Institute in the forties; she was a dressmaking student enrolled through correspondence at the time. Also included is a smaller supplementary booklet 'How to Study Your Course' which she also owned. Her name is written in cursive on it, and as well as in the 'First Steps in Dressmaking' book.
• First Steps in Dressmaking. 133 pages. Published 1935, 1937, 1941. A comprehensive book on dressmaking including seams, stitches and patterns. Contains 3 distinct sections; each section contains a chapter of 'examination questions'. CONDITION: Signed inside the cover. Owner used a green pencil to underline certain sections up until page 28. Great vintage condition.
• Harmony in Dress. 111 pages. Published 1936, 1939, 1944. Book is dedicated more to the fashion side of garments rather than fundamentals. CONDITION: There is a tiny tear to one of the foldouts in 'Harmony in Dress'. Near perfect condition otherwise. Both books measure 8" x 5¼" x ½".
