1958 Underwood Universal Golden Touch 'Quiet Tab' Portable typewriter with Case
A very nice (RARE) specimen of an Underwood Universal 'Golden Touch' beige typewriter from 1958, made in Canada. Comes with original hard-shell case. Underwood typewriters became passé in the late fifties; thus not many of these 1958 models are known to exist. This body style was among the last of the "true" Underwoods before being taken under control by Olivetti. It's been said that this 1958 model is the last North American independently made Underwood Universal typewriter; a model boasting both their own 'Quiet Tab' and 'Golden Touch' monikers that in unison turned out to be futile attempts to recapture lost market share. By 1959 Olivetti owned majority interest in Underwood; the Universal was rebranded as the unsuccessful 'Underwood Leader' model using mostly the same components, and from there Underwood disappeared forever.
• 'Golden Touch' - gold-coloured metallic trim that surrounds the keyboard opening.
• 'Quiet Tab' - supposedly 'quiet' tabulator system.
• Colour ribbon selector switch.
• The "U" logo in the center of the typewriter doubles as a push-button ribbon cover release.

CONDITION - Case: Has seen better days, plenty of chafing and scratches to the exterior vinyl finish. Wood case shell is very solid with no major dents or damage. Inside is very clean. Handle, hinges/locks work great. Latch on outside to securely close case is working but there's no key. Locking mechanisms inside bottom of case (to secure typewriter) are in perfect working condition.
CONDITION - Typewriter: Near perfect condition; this typewriter was not heavily used. 100% mechanically functional, ribbon is still usable. All moving parts move freely and smoothly. No rust. Has a few tiny scrapes to the finish but hardly noticeable.
